Les McLaughlin was born in Alberta and moved with his
family to the Yukon
when he was two. While attending school in Whitehorse, he spent summers working on the Alaska Highway. He also visited
the site of the Klondike gold rush many times, and the highway and the gold rush
have continued to be important elements in his life. While at school
Les worked as a volunteer at a Whitehorse radio station. Later he joined CBC Radio in Whitehorse as an announcer, and
went on to spend more than 30 years as a producer with the CBC Northern
Service in Montreal
and Ottawa. Following
his
retirement, Les started a company that produces audio/visual
programs about the north for commercial sale. These CDs and DVDs include the life story of Robert Service
in audio format and the Alaska Highway story as an historic video. Les is also heard daily on
CKRW radio in Whitehorse with a series about Yukon history and development called Yukon Nuggets.
